Pixelogic

Every 5x5 Nonogram

by Joel Riley

On May 30th, I launched a realtime, collaborative web game where everyone pitches in to help solve all 24,976,511 5x5 nonogram puzzles that can be solved without guessing. 26 days later, almost 100k players have have collectively completed half of this ambitious goal - about 12.5 million puzzles!

The Game

Nonograms (a.k.a picross or griddlers) are a logic puzzle game where you use numerical clues to uncover a hidden picture. I created a nonogram game 16 years ago (available for iOS, macOS, Android, and soon Steam) called Pixelogic which features over 6,000 puzzles created by humans.

Every 5x5 Nonogram

you can help solve all ~25 million 5x5 nonograms that are solvable without guessing. The game is realtime and collaborative, meaning if you solve a puzzle it solves it for everyone else.

As of the writing of this blog post, players from around the world just solved 50%

Nonograms are a grid-based logic puzzle (same category as Sudoku) where you use numeric clues to complete a pixelated picture, though in this case the "images" are every possible pixel arrangement

Play Daily Puzzle

A few weeks back, I made the Pixelogic weekly puzzle, a challenging 25x25 picross puzzle, available on the web. It was a big success, with thousands of players playing online. Though The Weekly will return to the Pixelogic app soon, it seems there is something special about having puzzles available on the web. It's easy to share and play on any device.

For a limited time, I'm making the daily featured puzzle available on the web as well. At 15x15 or 20x20, The Daily is less daunting than The Weekly, making it the perfect daily challenge.

If you have been eagerly waiting for Pixelogic for Android (it's coming!), the web player should help you get your daily picross fix until then.
